Winner: MCprep Version Artwork Contest

MCprep version artwork contest

That’s right, we have a winner! The most recent MCprep contest was the first of its kind. The winning submission would go on to be the next version splash art for the upcoming MCprep addon release. The goal of the contest was to show off as many of the new features possible since MCprep v3.4.0, while being constrained to using the provided starting world export. See the contest announcement here.

Special thanks goes to our judges: TheDuckCow, Standingpad Animations, and zNight. Thanks for stepping up and helping make the hard call.

The winning entry

Big congratulations to Umaik101 (YouTube) for being the winner with your entry below! This will be featured in the very next MCprep version release.

Umaik101 entry

This entry is stellar. It manages to use a ton of new features in MCprep, to list them briefly: Warden rig, cat rig, frog rig, rain emitter, snow-emitter and other particle effects. In addition to that, it has a nice composition. I love the stylistic tilt of the rain on one side and the snow and light glare on the other. All the little vignettes of characters add plenty of details to get lost in. Great work!

For full disclosure: Umaik101 did add some edits to the provided world export. This includes the foreground (added level where the frog is) and background (added snow hill and the hill further behind). We decided it was fair, since the majority of the visible world is from the provided export.

All submissions

See the gallery below for all the other submissions. It’s tragic that there may only be one winner, but we all get to enjoy the hard work everyone put in. The other entries below are based on submission order, and not based on judging votes or anything else.

It’s worth saying that while this contest has only one winner, we will consider runner ups for future MCprep versions. This could happen if that are other patch releases before the next major (3.5) release of MCprep. Expect to have more contests like this in the future!

Nice use of the allay and armored steve, and some fun playing around with blocks. The scene could have read a little clearer if focussed a bit closer in on the subject, but then again there was also great negative space that would have worked well for splash art.

Look at those explosions go! I have to wonder what happened moments before. I think the framing in on the characters could have brought it more together, and while I understand the blurring out was to make it fit more as background art to the version title, you could have pulled more of the scene into focus. Nice use of texture swapping!

This one completely spooked me out when I first saw it. Stunning render, great composition and edge lighting. This is a great example of lighting in way that leaves intentional unrecognizable shadows while still delivering a clear message. I hope Steve doesn’t fall down that hole!

CubicTheater entry

An absolutely gorgeous entry, and has framing that would work incredibly well for splash art. And let the simply framed subject not fool here, there is packed a number of MCprep update features including: Cycles optimization, multiple weather/particle systems (Including fireflys and rain), the Frog rig, and the cat rig. The little edge lighting on the world blocks works so well too.

Flxmerity entry

Another underground entry, and again with a custom texturepack! Nice use of the lava particle effects spawner, as well as some other MCprep features. I can feel the heat of the glow. Can’t help but think a more powerful picture could come from a framing that zooms closer in on the player and puts the the skelleton out of focus to bring in some suspense. Nonetheless, nice work.

This one takes the cake for the usage of the most mobs! It features some good smooth lighting and a well-prepped world. I do like all the work that went into custom posing of each of the characters, and I still find new details like – like the frog’s tongue vs the goat! Nice work leaving some good framing for the MCprep title top left, it would have worked well as splash art.
