Cactus Road Trip – 3D Render

by Patrick W. Crawford

For every cactus, there is a story. This render is yet another made in honor of a dear friend’s birthday, naturally with relevant references few would understand. Why would a cactus be riding shotgun be so happy? Are those little kumquats by its pot? And did the cactus bring enough stock for that polaroid camera? I leave much of that for your own imagination here.

Cactus Road Trip – Work In Progress Stages

Curious to see how this excited cactus render came to be? Flip through the different stages of development. You can see how initial blocking out goes through tweaks of angles, lighting, and how I slowly start adding elements as I make (or find) them.  Tap/click to fit to fullscreen.

To make this render, I leveraged a few addons – check them out:

  • Cycles Material Vault (for some materials, further modified)
  • Pro Lighting Skies*
  • Pro Lighting Studio*, an unconventional use I suppose
  • Edit Linked Libraries (already built into blender, but is so useful)

* disclaimer that I was one of the programmers behind these addons

Though I many of the items in this artwork, I do make a point to not reinvent wheels already laying around. Hence, I leveraged bits and pieces from the following models to save some time. All found on blendswap, a mix of CC0-CC-BY assets.

Created in Blender 2.79 with love. Any product placement is incidental and non-sponsored.
